My journey began with the love and loss of my beloved daughter, Shai Ambrisha Rogers. Shai was a bright light in my life, whose brilliance was tragically dimmed far too soon. In 2000, at just three years old, she succumbed to pneumonia. Her story is one of courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to helping others avoid the pain I endured.
Shai's health took a turn for the worse about six months before her passing. Initially diagnosed with a virus by the doctor, her condition deteriorated rapidly. After a few days of being non-responsive and not showing any signs of improvement, I took her back to the doctor, only to be told she had an ear infection. What followed were four agonizing months of visits to the ER and various doctors, desperately seeking answers. Feeling utterly defeated and at my wits' end, I finally met a compassionate doctor from Cook Children's Medical Center.
Shai was admitted for observation and tests, but her fever persisted. She was eventually transferred to Dallas Children's Hospital, where, after about three weeks, she was moved to the ICU. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Shai passed away two weeks later. I was in my twenties, overwhelmed by grief and a lack of knowledge about health insurance and navigating the healthcare system.
In the years that followed, I questioned why I had not been better prepared or informed about health insurance. When I asked my mother why she never taught me about it, she revealed that she didn't know either. This revelation ignited a true determination within me to learn everything I could about health insurance. I delved into research, attended workshops, and became the go-to person for my coworkers during open enrollment periods. I knew I wanted to help others avoid the helplessness I felt during Shai's illness.
My path led me to Towers Watson, where I started learning the basics of Medicare during a seasonal job. It was there that I discovered the role of a health insurance agent and realized this was how I could make a difference. I immersed myself in the field, gaining extensive experience in customer service, compliance , training, and consultative sales.
Driven by a passion for helping others, I founded OpenTrust Advisors. Our mission is to make health insurance understandable and accessible for everyone. I believe in complete transparency, always guiding clients toward solutions that meet their specific needs and circumstances. Each day, as I pass Shai's picture, I am reminded of why I do what I do.
Shai's memory is the cornerstone of my commitment to this work. Her life, though brief, has inspired a mission to ensure that no one else has to endure the pain and confusion I experienced. Through OpenTrust Advisors, I am dedicated to being a resource, a guide, and a beacon of hope for anyone navigating the complexities of health insurance.
